The Faces of Ma..

MA is the Japanese concept of the void between all "things."

Ma is filled with nothing but energy and feeling. It speaks of silence as opposed to sound, of lack as opposed to excess, the silence between the notes that make the music…

It makes me think of the silence between friends.. when the silence is not empty but full of words that don’t need to be spoken…How lovely is that..

This painting of Ma was done in 4 sections but painted together. They stand alone or as a whole.

The Kettle's Yard gallery was conceived as a “living place where works of art could be enjoyed” by Jim & Helen Ede. Entry to the house is gained by pulling on a door bell, continuing a tradition of 'open house' started by Ede.

I had a wonderful couple of days completing this painting which I have called Sheer Delight. Acrylic on canvas, this is a painting that I started sometime ago and waited till I had that "feeling" that now was the time to finish it. It was quite frustrating literally watching paint dry, to see whether or not it was finished! Always difficult to know until the paint is dry ….. I judge my paintings on how I feel when the paint is dry.

I have one painting that has been waiting a year or so for that feeling. It has to have three strokes added to it to represent a stone circle on Dartmoor. But I can only do "the strokes" when i feel "right" as they are so important to the picture - their size, position and density of colour. One day soon...!!!!!

I had a clear day so it was wonderful to be....

..able to go in to my studio area and get stuck in. The plan is still to have no plan but let my paintings emerge from the feelings and thoughts that I have. This affects the colour, texture and methods that I use. On this particular day I continued with some paintings that I had already started but had not finished. I am waiting for them to dry to decide if they are now finished or need more layers.

I also started a drawing..its an image that I have done before using chalk pastels. I tend to shy away from drawing so when I am in the mood its great to take the time to focus and block out those "I can't draw / I'm not good enough" thoughts!

Celebrating 40 years by commissioning a painting!

I was asked to paint an abstract picture - my choice of style, colour and size. The person wish to use money given to them for their 40th birthday. I told them that I was not sure when the painting would be completed as with abstracts currently my plan is to not have a plan! Some months later as I was painting “Joyful Explosion” I knew that this was the painting for them and I am pleased to say they were delighted with their painting and it hangs on their sitting room wall. Co-incidentally the colours match the colour scheme! When painting the picture I had no idea, I just chose the colours that came to me at the time.

I was luckily enough to be in New York whilst this exhibition was on. I was not aware of Chihuly’s work, but I am now. Simply amazing and should you ever be able to see one, go! Here is a taste of what I saw…

At the Guildford Whitewall Gallery in September 2017 was quite wonderful and I was fortunate enough to meet and talk with Daneille during the opening of the exhibition.

Installation at Hestercombe Gardens, Somerset

This was an artistic collaboration with Juliet Farnese and we were one of only a few artists who were commissioned to provide a sculpture to be part of their “Night time Christmas Walk” held in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The sculpture was designed to appeal to a mixed audience, including families across a wide range of ages and abilities whilst enjoying their magical walk around the Hestercombe gardens on a cold wintery night.

Juliet and I worked on a Christmas Story Wall ( see Juliet's artist impression of the Wall below) made of Natural bamboo fencing (6ft 4" X 13ft approximately) which was used as a "natural canvas" to which I applied acrylic paint, sprays and gold and silver leaf. Juliet focussed on illustrating on coloured Perspex sheets that formed windows in the Bamboo panel, and these sheets depicted Christmas images such as holly; robin; Christmas tree; Angels etc

Candles were placed behind the structure provided lighting illuminating the windows providing a stained-glass effect in the Christmas Wall.
